Do You Need a Car to Go on Day Trips from Auckland?
The short answer here is yes, you can go on many day trips from Auckland without a car. However, it’s so much easier to have one. Many of the best day trips from Auckland sit outside of public transport routes, so driving gives you the freedom to explore so many more beaches, hikes and small towns, all on your own time.
Getting your Own Car: To Buy or Rent?
If you’re on a working holiday visa or plan to stay in New Zealand for a while, buying a car will be the most economical option. Auckland is also one of the easiest places to find a good car for a reasonable price, with so many listings on Facebook Marketplace.
Just make sure that whatever car you go for has a recent WOF and a regular service history. A quick mechanical check or a pre-purchase inspection can also save you a lot of money later.

The Mercer Bay Loop walk adds another layer to your visit, leading you up over headlands with incredible viewpoints.
Unfortunaley, there is no way to reach Piha by public transport. If you don’t want to drive, a guided tour is the best way to get there. This tour is guided by the lovely Brett and has an additional stop at Mt Eden. It takes the stress out of navigating the windy West Coast roads and lets you focus on the scenery.
6. Muriwai Beach

Once you’re in Raglan, there are a couple of standout experiences. You have to try surfing as that is such an intrisic part of Raglan. There are plenty of surf lessons for beginners or anyone wanting to ride the waves at Raglan’s famous breaks.
Alternatively, you can go rock climbing, canyoning, or simply café hop and explore the quaint shops around the village. All are excellent ways to make the most of your day in this coastal town.
10. Tititiri Matanga Island

A trip to Tititiri Matanga Island is maybe the most underrated day trip from Auckland on this list. The Island is a wildlfie sanctuary and one of New Zealand’s predator-free islands.
It’s a paradise for bird lovers, with rare species like kokako, takahe, and tuatara that you won’t easily see anywhere else. The island’s forests, open meadows, and quiet beaches make it feel like a world away from the city.
Once on the island, you can explore at your own pace, follow well-marked walking tracks, or join a guided tour for around $10 to learn about the conservation work and native species.
If you can, follow along the lighthouse walk for panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf. It is perfect for photos or a peaceful afternoon stroll.
The ferry is pretty expensive at $110 per person, but it’s very much worth it and you’ll struggle to find another expereince like it.
11. Mangawhai

Mangawhai is a beautiful coastal town known for is beautiful beaches in the Northland of New Zealand. However, as there are no public transport and no tours to the town, you will need to rent a car to get here. The drive from Auckland is sceanic and relativly short so perfect for a day trip.
Start your visit with a treat at Bennetts Café & Chocolaterie, a local favourite for coffee, pastries, and handmade chocolates. After that, head to Mangawhai Heads for a coastal walk with incredible views over the beach, cliffs, and harbour. The walk is moderate and offers plenty of photo opportunities along the way.
Mangawhai is perfect for a quieter, laid-back day trip, combining tasty local stops with stunning natural scenery. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a way to escape the crowds in Auckland.
12. Goat Island Marine Reserve

If you love sealife and exploring the oceans depths, you must visit Goat Island Marine Reserve. It is one of New Zealand’s most accessible and rewarding marine experiences, home to colourful fish, kina, and so much more marine life, all just a short swim from the shore.
You can explore the underwater world on your own with a mask and snorkel, join a tour or rent seethrough kayak to see marine life without getting wet. You can even go on a guided diving experience to get even closer to the vibrant marine life.
The reserve also has short walking tracks and picnic areas, making it easy to combine a bit of land exploration with your aquatic adventure.
Tip: For the clearest water, try to visit after a period of dry weather. Waiting around two weeks after rainfall will give you silt-free water, perfect for snorkeling.
Bonus Day Trip from Auckland: The Bay of Islands

I’ve added the Bay of Islands as a bonus because it really deserves more than just a day. However, if you only have a single day, it’s still worth the trip. It’s one of my favourite spots in Northland so I wouldn’t want you to miss out just beause you’re short on time.
To make the most of your day, start the drive early and aim to arrive in Paihia as soon as possible. From there, hop on a sailing cruise to explore the islands, watch for penguins nesting on the cliff faces, and snorkel in crystal-clear waters. You’ll also get to enjoy stunning scenery and peaceful beaches that feel a world away from Auckland.
If you prefer to explore on land, Paihia itself has charming cafés, boutique shops, and walking tracks, while a drive to Russell offers history, heritage buildings, and a lovely harbour to stroll along. Stop at Omata winery along the way to try their signature flight in a gorgous setting.
A day trip won’t cover everything, but with an early start and a well-planned itinerary, you can still experience the magic of the Bay of Islands.
