Heading to the stunning Ionian island of Kefalonia and unsure where to stay? You’re in luck! This guide has everything you need to find the ideal spot for your perfect Greek getaway.

The Ionian islands are beautiful gems along Greece’s coastline, surrounded by clear emerald waters and filled with picturesque landscapes and quaint villages. And whilst I knew how stunning these islands were, I didn’t quite realise how breathtaking they were until I visited last year.

Kefalonia is one of my favourite Greek Islands. I spent my days here exploring its ancient Greek villages and discovering the most beautiful beaches straight from the movies.

However, as the largest Ionian island with so many amazing spots, it can be tricky knowing where to stay in Kefalonia. Whether you’re looking for a quiet retreat by the sea, a town with some local flair, or a cosy vintage with authentic charm, knowing where to start can seem overwhelming.

With this guide, I hope to take all that stress away for you. I’ll walk you through the best areas to stay in Kefalonia, making sure you know which area is best for the holiday you want to have. I’ll even recommend the best hotels in each area, so it’s even easier to find the best hotel for you in Kefalonia.

1. Argostoli

If you’re looking for a vibrant and convenient base on Kefalonia, Argostoli is a fantastic choice. As the island’s bustling capital, it offers a delightful mix of urban energy and coastal charm. Here, you’ll find a lively waterfront promenade perfect for evening strolls or a romantic dinner where you can watch for turtles bobbing at the surface.

Argostoli comes alive at night and is perhaps the best place on the island if you’re looking for a lively evening out. With plenty of cocktail bars with rooftop terraces and gardens, you can enjoy the warm Greek evenings with a drink in hand until the late hours of the day.

Plus, as the island’s capital, it is a great spot if you want to explore the island and don’t have your own transportation. It is close to the airport and has bus routes connecting it to most major towns around the island. And if buses don’t appeal to you, taxis are always readily available to take you to the more remote locations.

Some of Argostoli’s key attractions include the Kefalonia Archaeological Museum, vibrant Lithostroto Street, and scenic De Bosset Bridge. The harbour and Koutavos Lagoon offer relaxing spots, while St. Spyridon Church adds historical charm.

The town itself is a great place to relax. Lassi is pretty small, primarily one long street lined with hotels and tavernas, each with its own quirky style. Butler’s House is a particularly fascinating restaurant, decorated with the most random things. You could spend hours just looking at all the knick-knacks on the walls.

We also discovered a gem tucked away off the main road called Kamarules Stamatlatos. This small restaurant is tucked under pine trees just off the coastline. Enjoying incredible fresh prawns here while watching the sunset was a highlight of our trip.
