Are you looking for the best cafés in York? Well look no further, I’ve got you covered!

Having lived here for nearly six years, I’ve had ample time to discover the best cafés York has to offer. I was a student for most of this time in York and found cafés to be the perfect escape from the rather grey and grizzly library.

But York’s cafés have a lot more to offer than just a good place to type away on your laptop. Whether you’re visiting on holiday or a local searching for a new favourite afternoon spot, York’s café scene has something for everyone.

I’m going to take you through a list of the very best cafés in York. So whether you’re after a cosy coffee shop with delicious cake, a quirky hangout, or simply the best coffee in York, I’ve got you covered.

Best Streets for Cafés in York

Before we dive into the top cafés in York, I want to share with you three streets that are particularly great for finding independent coffee shops with delicious coffee and sweet treats. Many of the cafés I have for you in this post can be found on these streets,  but there are so many more I couldn’t add. After all, York is such a wonderful city that it’s impossible to fit all its highlights into a single blog post.

Fossgate

First up, we have Fossgate. This small but beautiful street in York’s city centre is filled with independent shops, cafés, and restaurants. With charming cobbled streets and brick buildings, it is a must-visit spot for anyone coming to York, especially if you’re a coffee lover.

Strolling down Fossgate, you’ll find a variety of cafés, each with its unique vibe and offerings. Whether you’re in the mood for a quiet nook to enjoy a book or a lively spot to catch up with friends, Fossgate has something to suit every taste.

One that didn’t make it into my top 13 but certainly deserves an honorable mention is Remedy Coffee Shop and Wine Bar. As one of the best independent vegan cafés in York, Remedy has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, serving delicious food. Whether you’re a vegan or just looking to try something new, Remedy is a spot you can’t go wrong with

Goodramgate

The second street that’s worth a walk down is Goodramgate. As one of York’s oldest streets, it is steeped in history and is just a step away from the York Minster. Inside its medieval buildings, you’ll discover plenty of unique vintage shops, independent restaurants from Italian to Indian, and, of course, many coffee shops and cafés.

Goodramgate has a variety of cafés on offer, each with its distinctive ambience. From cosy, family-run establishments to trendy spots with artisanal coffee, there’s something to satisfy every coffee lover.

One of my favorite spots on Goodramgate is The Habit. As it’s more of a bar-turned-café during the daytime, it didn’t quite fit with the other cafés on this list. However, it’s still worth a visit. The Habit serves great food, has a welcoming staff, and boasts a small yet lovely outdoor patio with views of the Minster. It’s usually quite quiet during the day which makes it the perfect spot for students or anyone who works from home.

Micklegate

The third and final street to check out is Micklegate. This street is home to a variety of shops, cafés, and restaurants. Whether you’re shopping for unique gifts, enjoying a leisurely meal, or soaking in the lively atmosphere, Micklegate has something for everyone.

Although small, Micklegate stands out for its impressive array of cafés. Each café provides a unique experience for coffee lovers and food enthusiasts. While not directly in the city center, Micklegate is still within the city walls and only a five-minute walk away. This makes the cafés here a bit quieter but without any loss in quality.

The Best Cafés and Coffee Shops in York

1. Brew & Brownie

Brew & Brownie is one of York’s best café and brunch spots, located near the picturesque Museum Gardens in the city centre. The interior, with its wooden accents, cosy seating and rustic charm, provides a relaxing setting to enjoy a leisurely meal or catch up with friends.

They offer a wide array of sweet treats, but the café’s signature brownies are a must-try. So rich and indulgent, they perfectly complement their coffee. However, Brew & Brownie offer more than just sweet treats. Their menu boasts an array of hearty breakfasts, brunches, and lunches, including artisan sandwiches, flavoured French toast and wholesome salads. Plus, they always make sure to include vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options within their menu.

Because of its popularity, Brew and Brownie often experience queues. However, the efficient staff expertly manages the flow, so it never feels like you wait very long. Alternatively, you can always opt to grab a takeaway coffee and cake thoughtfully packaged in environmentally friendly materials.

With its commitment to quality and community, Brew & Brownie is one of York’s favourite cafés.

2. Robinsons Café

Robinsons Café is one of the best cafes in York but is often overlooked by visitors. Located outside the main city centre, it is about a 10-minute walk to Robinsons Cafe on Bishopthorpe Road. Robinsons Cafe is a small, neighbourhood cafe with a lot to offer.

Serving incredible food, the owners have brought their experience working in Michelin-starred restaurants to the Café scene. I had the fluffiest American-style pancakes I’ve ever tasted and my friend’s avocado toast was overflowing with avocado. Plus, the friendly and welcoming atmosphere created by the staff made the whole experience lovely.

Of course, that’s not all they serve. Their menu serves all the classic breakfast and brunch options including smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Plus, I’m sure many of you will be happy to see the homemade hash browns on the sides menu. Whilst I didn’t try these, I saw plenty heading out of the kitchen so they’re surely a firm favourite.

Just be wanted, you most likely will have to queue to dine here. I arrived just before 10 am and only a handful of people were in front of me. However, within half an hour the line had almost doubled. The staff were very friendly and efficient with managing the queue, but the early bird definitely gets the worm here. Or the pancakes, if you’re me!

Location | 7 Bishopthorpe Rd, York YO23 1NA

Opening Times | 8.30 – 3 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays, 9 am – 3 pm Saturdays and Sundays. Closed Wednesday.

3. Gatehouse Coffee

Gatehouse Coffee is a very unique café in York, not only for its quality coffee but also for its location. In the historic confines of York’s medieval city walls, Gatehouse Cofee is in the prime location inside one of the city’s ancient gatehouses. Stepping through its stores, you quite literally feel like stepping into a little slice of history.

On a sunny day, you can enjoy the unique expereince of enjoying your coffee whilst seated atop the walls themselves. Alternatively, the cosy interior, adorned with fairy lights, offers a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The staff are always welcoming, and there is a bar stool area perfect for laptop users. Whilst you do tend to get a lot of tourists here during the summer months, it’s still a delightful spot for a coffee and cake in the afternoon.

Kiosk has some of the best coffee in York and is a must-visit for any coffee connoisseur. If you’re unable to get a seat or don’t have time to stop, make sure to stop by even for a takeaway cup.

Whilst it’s really all about the coffee at Kiosk, they do serve lunch Tuesday to Sunday, and brunch and lunch Thursday to Saturday. From full-cooked breakfasts to extra special sausage butties, all freshly made. Plus, they always have delicious vegan options available.

5. Coffee Culture

Coffee Culture is an independent coffee shop in York, filled with character. Although the entrance appears small, the café sprawls across three floors which can be found by climbing a small, winding staircase. As you climb, you’ll discover cosy seating areas adorned with wooden accents and warm lighting. The snug rooms can feel a little tight at times when it’s busy, however it adds to the café’s charm and warm atmosphere.

They specialise in excellent coffee and homemade treats, including traditional brownies, rhubarb tarts, poppy seed cake, and my personal favourite, Rocky Road. Additionally, if you’re after something a little more substantial, they serve tasty sandwiches made from local produce in fluffy bread.

Remarkably, despite its central location just steps away from York Minster, the prices are very reasonable.
