It’s also a great starting point for a mini backpacking trip. I spent 7 days exploring Croatia’s coastline, hopping from Dubrovnik to the nearby islands of Mljet and Korcula. It was an unforgettable experience and would be a great, first backpacking trip.

I first visited the city while solo backpacking through Italy and instantly fell in love with its Renaissance charm and vibrant atmosphere. And whilst I only had 2 days in Florence, I managed to see so much and felt a deep connection to the city.
The Piazza del Duomo itself is beautiful enough to warrant a visit, home to the stunning Florence Cathedral with its iconic Brunelleschi dome. Climb to the top for breathtaking views of the city. Nearby, the Uffizi Gallery houses masterpieces by Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Leonardo da Vinci, offering an unforgettable art experience.
The city’s compact size makes it easy to explore on foot, and wandering through the narrow, cobblestone streets is a delight. Grab some gelato as you explore the lively Piazza della Signoria and the picturesque Ponte Vecchio, both perfect spots for soaking up the local atmosphere.
However, one potential drawback is the crowds, especially during peak tourist season. Popular sites can get quite busy, so it’s a good idea to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the rush. If you’re looking for some respite from the crowds, visit Pitti Gardens. I spend a few hours just enjoying its peaceful atmosphere before heading back into the busy city.
Despite this, Florence’s rich history, stunning architecture, and welcoming vibe make it an ideal destination for solo travellers. Whether you’re exploring world-class museums, relaxing in beautiful gardens, or simply savouring gelato by the Arno River, Florence offers a memorable and enriching solo travel experience.
11. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is a fantastic destination for solo travellers, blending history, culture, and a lively atmosphere. I spent three days exploring Budapest’s quirky character and can attest to it being an exciting place to explore on your own.
The iconic Buda Castle offers stunning views of the city and the Danube River and the fairytale fisherman’s bastion is perfect for those solo travel shots. Don’t miss the impressive Parliament Building and the serene St. Stephen’s Basilica, both must-see landmarks.
One of the highlights of Budapest is its famous thermal baths. Spend a relaxing afternoon at the Széchenyi Thermal Bath, soaking in the warm waters and soothing those aches from carrying your backpack.

Just make sure to always be aware of your surroundings. While Budapest is generally safe, it’s always wise to stay alert, and know your drink limit, especially when free shots are involved!

Of course, you have to visit Nyhavn, the picturesque harbour with its colourful buildings and lively cafés. It’s a great spot to relax with a coffee and take a casual stroll. From there, visit the iconic Little Mermaid statue and take a leisurely walk through Kastellet, a charming star-shaped fortress.
Discover the city’s rich history with a tour of Rosenborg Castle and Christiansborg Palace, both brimming with historical significance. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the National Gallery of Denmark and the innovative exhibits at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.

Whilst Athens wasn’t originally on my radar as a solo destination, once I experienced its lively atmosphere, welcoming locals, and stunning landmarks, there’s no way I wasn’t putting it on this list. I spent a long weekend eating Greek food, marvelling at ancient wonders, and making friends with as many cats as I could.
With iconic landmarks such as the Acropolis, where you can marvel at the Parthenon and other ancient ruins, Athen’s is quite literally a window to the past. Stroll through neighbourhoods like Plaka with its charming streets, traditional tavernas and vibrant atmosphere. Or visit the loud but exciting Monastiraki Flea Market. Its mix of quirky shops and street vendors is ideal for finding unique souvenirs.
However, my favourite thing about Athens was its food. From the many street vendors selling delicious gyros, with their perfectly seasoned meat and fresh toppings, to the bustling tavernas where I enjoyed savoury moussaka and crisp Greek salad, the city is a paradise for food lovers. And I ate my body weight in ice cream. It was brilliant.

14. Stockholm, Sweden
Spread across 14 islands connected by bridges, Stockholm is a unique city with picturesque scenery that makes it a delight to explore on your own. Additionally, you can travel here with some piece of mind. Sweeden is one of the safest cities in the world, and whilst Stockholm has some pickpockets like most capitals, you can feel quite safe exploring here alone.
15. Bologna, Italy
When I backpacked through Italy, Bologna was a city I instantly fell in love with. It’s a fantastic destination for solo travellers, thanks to its welcoming atmosphere and prime location, which makes it a popular stop for many backpackers. The city’s vibrant university scene infuses it with a youthful, energetic vibe, making it a lively place to explore alone.
Bologna’s social scene is perfect for meeting people. The bustling cafes and bars, often featuring live music, provide a great setting for solo travellers to engage in conversation and experience local traditions. The locals are always very welcoming, and eager to help should you need it. But as it’s such an easy city to walk around, I don’t think you’ll need it. In fact, it’s a perfect weekend trip in Europe, and you can hit most of the major sites in just a day or two.
