Planning to spend just one day in Dubrovnik? Look no further – I’ve got the perfect itinerary sorted!

Dubrovnik, a city of medieval buildings, terracotta rooftops, and beautiful coastlines, pretty much has it all. It’s a place that holds a special place in my heart, with countless fond memories from when I visited with my family back in 2016.

Recently, I spent one week packingpacking croatia. With so little time, I only had 24 hours to spend in Dubrovnik. But, I’m pleased to say that Dubrovnik still has the same captivating allure.

Despite growing in popularity with thousands of tourists visiting each summer, Dubrovnik remains a gem waiting to be explored. This does mean Dubrovnik can get incredibly crowded, which might put people off. However, I was surprised by how a single day in Dubrovnik was the perfect way to experience this beautiful city without feeling overwhelmed.

In this post, I’ll guide you through exactly how to spend a day in Dubrovnik. With the top things you should prioritise seeing, restaurant recommendations and more. Luckily, you can pack a lot in just 24 hours in Dubrovnik! So, let’s dive in and uncover the best of what this enchanting city has to offer.

Is One Day Enough Time to Explore Dubrovnik?

Whilst a lot of people choose to spend 3 or more days in Dubrovnik, you can definitely see its highlights in just 24 hours. The old town is pretty small, and you can easily explore it in the afternoon. Plus, there are plenty of small, rock-formed beaches nearby if you want to spend a couple of hours relaxing.

Here are the top two reasons to day a day trip to Dubrovnik:

Cost Effective: Opting for a day trip makes enjoying Dubrovnik a lot more budget-friendly. You can save on accommodation and dining costs by returning to your base elsewhere in Croatia or nearby towns, where costs are a lot less. Especially during the summer!

Crowd Control: Dubrovnik’s popularity can sometimes lead to overwhelming crowds, especially during peak tourist seasons. By visiting for just a day, you can strategically plan your itinerary to avoid the busiest times. This will ensure you have a more pleasant experience as you explore the city’s attractions. Then you can escape to your quieter stay outside of the city after a fulfilling day in the city.

Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik

Whilst Dubrovnik is often thought of as a summer destination, it’s actually a pretty good place to visit all year round. It just depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

Peak Season (July and August): This is when Dubrovnik experiences the highest number of tourists. The weather is typically hot and sunny during these months, making it perfect for beach activities and exploring the city. However, the city can get crowded, and prices for accommodations and activities are usually higher.

Shoulder Seasons (May-June, September-October): I think Septemeber to October is the best time to visit Dubrovnik. The weather is still warm, but the crowds are thinner compared to peak season. You can enjoy sightseeing, outdoor activities, and beautiful beaches without dealing with excessive crowds. This is when I chose to visit, and it was a great balance between weather, crowds and cost of accommodation.

Off-Season (November-April): Not a lot of people think to visit Dubrovnik during the winter months, but it’s actually not a bad time to visit. Not only does Dubrovnik experience fewer tourists during the winter months, but Croatia can do Christmas pretty well.

While the weather may be cooler and some attractions might have reduced hours, with fewer crowds, you have more flexibility with how you schedule your day. Additionally, prices for accommodations and flights tend to be lower during this time.

Top Things to Do with One Day in Dubrovnik

Fort Lovrijenac

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you’ll already know all about Fort Lovrijenac. As the filming location for the Red Keep in King’s Landing, it’s now high on people’s list of what to visit in Dubrovnik. But it’s more than just a filming location.

Built in the 11th century, Fort Lovrijenac has played a significant role in the defense of Dubrovnik over the centuries. Its strategic location atop a sheer cliff made it an impregnable stronghold, guarding the city against potential invaders from both land and sea. And despite several sieges, including attacks by the Venetians and Ottomans, the fortress remained unconquered throughout its history.

Today, you can explore the fortress and admire its well-preserved architecture, which blends elements of Renaissance and Baroque styles. The interior features a central courtyard, surrounded by sturdy walls and ramparts. You can climb to the top for incredible panoramic views of Dubrovnik’s coastline and the surrounding islands.

Top tip: Check if the fortress is hosting any events during your stay. They often have various theatrical performances and concerts running, and the fortress is an incredible venue.

Pile gate

Whilst the Pile Gate is more of a passing stop on your day in Dubrovnik, but its definitely one of Dubrovnik’s most impressive sites. As one of the main entrances to Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the gate dates back to the 15th century. It’s made of an iconic drawbridge and two towers as part of the city’s defensive fortifications.

The gate itself is adorned with a sculpted arch featuring the statue of St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik, standing guard over those who pass through. Not a bad way to start off your exploration of the Old Town, right?

Old Town

As you pass through the Pile Gate in the Old Town. A labyrinth of cobblestone pathways, lined with centuries-old buildings adorned with Venetian-style facades, terracotta rooftops, and intricately carved stone details.

As you meander through these winding alleys, you’ll encounter hidden squares, charming boutiques, cosy cafes, and quaint tavernas tucked away in unexpected corners.

Here are some of the top places to visit in Dubrovnik’s Old Town:

Jesuit Staircase

The Jesuit Staircase, also affectionately known as the Spanish Steps of Dubrovnik, is like stepping into a fairy tale in the heart of the Old Town. Crafted by Italian architect Pietro Passalacqua and completed in 1738, it’s a grand Baroque marvel. With 44 steps leading to St. Ignatius Church, it’s a journey through history and beauty.

What makes the Jesuit Staircase extra special is its charm. Imagine balustrades adorned with statues of saints and delicate Baroque details that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a painting.

And, of course, it was another location featured in Game of Thrones—remember Cersei’s “walk of shame” scene? Yup, this is the place! Of course, this brings plenty of tourists to the site, but that kind of adds to the charm. As you watch excited fans get their photo taken at the place where it all happened you can’t help but smile.

But beyond its star-studded resume, the Jesuit Staircase is a place of spirituality and community. It’s where religious processions and cultural events come to life, bridging the gap between the secular and the sacred.

Climb those steps and you’ll be rewarded with more than just a workout—you’ll get breathtaking views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town and beyond. It’s the perfect spot for a selfie or just soaking in the beauty of this historic city.

Rector’s Palace

Recot’s palace is one of the most beautiful spots in Dubrovnik. The outside is a beautiful blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque-styled architecture. We did miss the entrance a few times but if you head between the Town Hall and the cathedral on Pred Dvorom, you’ll find it hidden between a row of large archways.

Inside, the palace now serves as a museum, offering a delightful peek into Dubrovnik’s vibrant history. Wander through its halls adorned with art, artefacts, and exhibits that unveil the city’s political and cultural tapestry.

The courtyard in the centre of the palace has a stunning and grand stone staircase that leads up to a second floor surrounded by beautiful archways. Both spots are perfect for those Instagram photos.

However, if take a moment you’ll spot a small door leading to the palace’s prison cell. It was used to detain criminals and political prisoners during the time of the Dubrovnik Republic. The cramped, simply lit room is a stark contrast to the open palace. I didn’t spend too long in here, I can assure you! But it was a fascinating part of the palace’s history to see.

Church of St. Blaise

The Church of St. Blaise (Crkva Svetog Vlaha) is one of the most significant religious landmarks in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It is dedicated to St. Blaise, the patron saint of the city, who is believed to have protected Dubrovnik from various threats throughout its history, particularly from Venetian invasions and earthquakes.

The current Baroque-style church was constructed in the 18th century, replacing an earlier Romanesque church that was destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1667. And whilst its exterior is quite modest, its simplicity is rather beautiful. It makes sure to draw your attention to the statue of the saints and angels that adorn it.

Inside the church, visitors can admire a stunning array of artwork and religious artefacts, including paintings, sculptures, and relics associated with St. Blaise. The high altar is dedicated to St. Blaise and is decorated with a magnificent statue of the saint holding a model of Dubrovnik in his hand. It’s worth venturing inside to see the intricate Baroque detailing, marble columns, and ornate frescoes that decorate the church.

Franciscan Monastery

Another one of Dubrovnik’s most beautiful spots is the Franciscan Monastery. Whilst founded in the early 14th century, it has undergone several restorations since. Today, the monastery building mainly dates from the 17th century. But in between the Baroque-style monastery you can still spot some elements from earlier periods are still present.

The most striking feature of the Franciscan Monastery is its elegant cloister. Whilst it dates back to the 14th century but was reconstructed in the 17th century in a Renaissance style. But either way, it is stunning. The cloister is adorned with graceful columns, intricate arches, and a lush garden. Visiting here was like finding a little bit of peace in the heart of the bustling city.

If you’re here more for the history, you’ll find it interesting to know that the Franciscan Monastery hosts one of Europe’s oldest functioning pharmacies, operating since 1317. The pharmacy’s museum displays a fascinating collection of antique pharmaceutical equipment, jars, and documents, offering insight into the history of medicine and pharmacy in Dubrovnik.

rock jumping in Dubrovnik

Rock Jumping at a Local Beach

When you visit a place surrounded by the beautiful turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea, you can’t resist taking a dip. And what better way than to jump from a great height? There might be a bit of sarcasm there from someone who isn’t the biggest fan of heights…

But rock jumping is a popular activity in Dubrovnik and it has lots of amazing places along its coasts for you to enjoy. Whilst there are a few traditional beaches in Dubrovnik, they are a little bit out of town. As you only have a day in Dubrovnik, I’d recommend heading somewhere a little closer where the locals have turned the rocky coastline into a social hub for sunbathing and enjoying the water.

And if you’re not a fan of rock jumping, don’t worry, most of these places also have a nice ladder for you to take the slower way into the water.

Some great places for rock jumping close to Dubrovnik’s Old Town are:

Buža Cliff Bar: Located just outside the city walls near Pile Gate, Buža Cliff Bar offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea. It’s the best place to go if you’re short on time. Here, you can get straight into the water without leaving the old town. With a bar and plenty of flat rocks to relax on, you can spend a few hours here dipping in and out of the water. The water is deep enough for safe jumping, but always be cautious, especially during rough sea conditions.

Danče beach: Just 5 minutes from the Old Town, Danče beach is another great option for anyone wanting to get in the water. The beach, composed entirely of giant rocks (see my photo above), invites you to jump into the sea. There is a ladder for anyone who doesn’t fancy jumping in, plus the concreted areas make a surprisingly great area for sunbathers.

view from beach bar dodo showing a cove in Dubrovnik with people sunbathing and swimming in the sea. some have kayaks

Beach Bar Dodo: Located just around the corner from Danče beach is Beach Bar Dodo. I spent a few hours at the bar with a cocktail in hand, watching people jump from incredible heights. I have to say it was very entertaining. So whether you’re after a relaxed atmosphere with stunning views or a complete adrenaline rush, Beach Bar Dodo is a great spot to visit.

Sunset at Mount Srđ

Watching the sunset from Mount Srđ is the perfect way to end your day in Dubrovnik. Mount Srđ offers breathtaking panoramic views of Dubrovnik and the surrounding Adriatic Sea. You can easily access Mount Srđ by taking a gorgeous hike (my preferred way to get there!), taking the cable car, or driving up the winding road.

Whilst I do think hiking up to the top of the mountain offers a unique experience, make sure you have enough time to see the sunset from Mount Srđ. It is an unforgettable experience that showcases the natural beauty and charm of Dubrovnik from a new perspective.

As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues, painting the sea and the city in shades of gold and orange. From the summit of Mount Srđ, you can capture stunning photographs, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Note: If you do choose to hike up, make sure you have a ticket to get the cable car back down. You don’t want to be doing that in the dark. These can be purchase from the ticket booth at the bottom of the mountain.

Where to Eat and Drink on Your Day in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is filled with incredible places to eat. Dining in this city always feels like an experience. There’s nothing quite like eating fresh fish dishes and traditional Croatian cuisine set against the backdrop of the old town. When I first visited Dubrovnik, it was the ice cream here I remember most. So you can imagine my excitement seeing the shop is still there today. Plus, the ice cream is just as delicious.

Whilst dining in Dubrovnik is incredible, it can be very pricy. If you’re travelling to Dubrovnik on a budget, I have some cost-friendly recommendations to help you out. But, don’t worry, I’ve also got you covered if you’re after a bit of fine dining whilst on holiday too.

Best Bars for Cliffside drinks

Buza Bar I and Buza Bar II

Buza Bar I and Buza Bar II are both iconic seaside bars located on the rocks between the walls of the old town and the sea.

The original Buza Bar, Buza Bar 1, is the more well-known of the two. To reach it, you need to find a small exit in the walls and follow the narrow alley. Then, walking down some steps, you’ll come out on the rocks facing the sea. It all adds to the sense of adventure and discovery. Once there, patrons can enjoy drinks and light snacks while soaking in the breathtaking scenery and enjoying some refreshing dips in the sea.

Location | Crijevićeva ul. 9, 20000, Dubrovnik

Buza Bar II is located nearby, also perched on the cliffs overlooking the Adriatic. It offers a similar atmosphere and stunning views but tends to be slightly less crowded. Both bars are popular spots for tourists and locals alike, especially during the summer months. Visitors flock to Dubrovnik to enjoy its beautiful beaches and historic sites.

Location | Croatia, Ul. Ispod Mira 14, 20000, Dubrovnik

Beach Bar Dodo

Another hidden bar and beach just along the coast from the old town is Beach Bar Dodo. It offers a picturesque and fun place to spend your evening relaxing.

When you’re here, you can enjoy a variety of refreshing drinks, cocktails, and snacks while lounging on the pebble beach or soaking up the sun on the terrace. It has a very chilled-out vibe, making it one of my favourite places to hang out when in Dubrovnik.

strawberry icecream held by kizzi's hand in the streets of dubrovnik

Best Icecream in Dubrovnik

I was being very serious when I said Dubrovnik has some of the best ice cream I have ever had. And as a self-proclaimed ice cream expert, that says a lot. I fell in love with this ice cream when I was a child, indulging in its unique flavours like green apple. While I’ve searched high and low for that flavour elsewhere, I’ve never been able to find it.

When I came back here last summer, the strawberry ice cream became the new one to beat, and I must have had three in the 24 hours we were here. And I don’t feel the least bit guilty because not only did it taste delicious, but it was also so cheap! At just a couple of euros for a very generous helping, I was very tempted to sustain on an ice cream diet only when staying here.

Plus, as it’s just a few stores down from the Pile Gate, it makes the perfect first stop (and mid-stop, and last stop…) for anyone exploring the old town.
