Where to Stay in Korčula: The Top Areas in Korčula

Korčula Old Town

Korčula’s Old Town is a lively and beautiful place. Surrounded by a medieval wall, it is known as “little Dubrovnik,” with its stone houses and red, terracotta roofs. Many of the buildings were built between the 13th and 15th centuries. Today, these ancient buildings are filled with small boutique shops and relaxing bars and restaurants, perfect to spend a day exploring.

Because of the Old Town’s ancient history and convenient location, it is where most people choose to stay in Korčula. This means it is probably the busiest place on the island. But, don’t let that put you off staying here. It is noticeably quieter than Croatia’s more popular destinations such as Dubrovnik but still has that old-time charm.

If it is your first time visiting the island, I’d say that Korčula Old Town is the best place for your stay. There are taxis and bicycles readily available for you to rent, and the abundance of restaurants and bars makes it a great place to have a relaxing and enjoyable vacation.

Vela Luka

Vela Luka is on the opposite side of the island from the busy Korčula Town. Whilst this may seem like an inconvenience, it makes for a much quieter vacation with just as much seafood and natural beauty. This seaside port is filled with seafront restaurants, boutique shops, and a surprising amount of history.

If you stay here, you can explore caves filled with ancient artefacts, and visit the neighbouring island of Proized, an uninhabited island of white pebble beaches and crystalline blue seas.

If you don’t have a car, I wouldn’t recommend staying here for your whole stay. Instead, I’d visit Vela Luka on a day trip or choose to stay for an evening. That way, you can see Vela Luka as well as the stunning island of Proizd.

If you do have a car and are travelling from Split, it’s likely Vela Luka will be your first stopping point in Korčula. Vela Luka is the best place to stay if you have a car. You get that quiet town feel without being too remote and are free to travel to other areas of the island whenever you want.

Lumbarda

Lumbara is a picturesque town in Korčula, sandwiched between the beautiful Adriatic Sea and Korčula’s infamous wineries with views of the Pelješac peninsula. Along the coast, you’ll find beaches such as Vela Pržina, and Bilin Žal, which are rare but gorgeous sandy beaches surrounded by crystal clear blue seas.

This seaside resort is small but has some great restaurants for you to enjoy. When Korčula Town seems just a little too far away, grab a meal before heading to a beachside bar to relax in the evening sun. While you’re staying here, indulge in a sunset kayak along Korčula’s coast, or try out many of the local wineries. Taste the rare and unique Grk wine that can only be grown in Lumbarda.

Lumbarda is just south of Korčula Town and takes about 10 minutes to drive to the Old Town. If you’re after slightly cheaper accommodation than Korčula’s Old Town but still want to be close by and surrounded by sea, Lumbarda is a great option for you.

Žrnovo

Want to dive deep into Korčula’s natural beauty? Then Žrnovo is the best play to stay in Korčula for you. It is a lot quieter than all of the towns discussed so far, but it is a hidden gem. Located in the rural, hilly mainland of Korčula, Žrnovo is made up of 4 smaller hamlets, so the village is relatively spread out. However, it is possible to walk or cycle between them.

There are still a few restaurants and bars for you to enjoy, and a few supermarkets to pick up some snacks. But the highlight of Žrnovo is the stunning walking and cycling routes.

Žrnovo is just 3km away from Korčula town, making it a convenient place for you to stay. You can hire a bike from the town, or drive for about 5 minutes. Taxis are available from the harbour in Korčula Town, and a one-way trip will cost about €15-20 each way.

Račišće

Račišće is a small village on the north coast of Korčula. It’s one of the newer villages on the island, but the protective cove made it perfect for fishermen and sailors. Sitting in a bar surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, Račišće is the ideal place to stay for a tranquil vacation.

There are plenty of hiking and cycling trails in the village for you to enjoy. Whilst staying somewhere so remote might not be to everyone’s taste, I’d highly recommend cycling here down the coast from Korčula Town for some gorgeous scenery.

Blato

Blato is a town about 40 km from Korcula Town. It’s filled with beautiful homes of the islanders and makes for a great stop-off point when travelling through the island. It also has some great hiking routes in the surrounding hills.

However, when choosing where to stay in Korcula, the main area of Blato town might not be the best choice. It’s very quiet, and there are very few tourist amenities there for you to use and enjoy. There’s also very little accommodation available. Instead, you might want to look slightly further out into the coastal villages under Blato’s township.

Prižba

Prižba is a small village on the south coast of Korčula. It is mainly made up of tourists who are taking advantage of the beautiful coastline. As it is just 14km from Vela Luka, many people choose to stay here who are travelling from Split.

You’ll find many pebble beaches to spend your days relaxing or snorkelling in the blue Adriatic waters. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can rent a small boat and head out to the small island of Lastovo which sits just off the coast. Or you can stay on land and explore the surrounding vineyards.

Prigradica

Prigradica is a small fishing village on the north coast of the island, just 4 km away from the centre of Blato. As one of the oldest settlements on the island, you can expect to find many old stone houses from days gone by. Now, due to its stunning location, it is primarily a tourist spot. It is a much quieter option than the main towns such as Korčula Town but has beautiful beaches, restaurants and cafes for you to enjoy.
