Just a short ferry ride from Dubrovnik, the Mljet offers a slice of paradise with charming villages and mesmerizing beauty. I spent a few days here last summer exploring all the things Mljet has to offer and completely fell in love with its tranquillity.

How long to Spend Mljet National Park
You can comfortably explore Mljet National Park in anywhere from 1 to 3 days, depending on your interests. If you’re keen to simply see the park and have a great day trip, a single day is great. However, for a more leisurely experience that allows you to delve into the island’s trails and fully enjoy its serene lakes, a 3-day stay is ideal.
Personally, I stayed in Mljet for 3 days and found it to be the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. With an extra day or two, you can explore beyond the main lakes, visiting places such as the beautiful beaches of Suplenara and the intriguing Odysseus’ Cave.
How to Get to Mljet National Park
The island of Mljet sits to the northwest of Dubrovnik and is only accessible by ferry. It makes for the perfect destination for hopping between islands or travelling between Split and Dubrovnik.
There are three ferry ports in Mljet: Sobra, Polače, and Pomena. When visiting the national park, it’s best to travel to the villages of Polače or Pomena. Pomena is the closest to the Lakes, but Polace is also only a 30-minute walk away.
From Split
The ferry from Split only goes to Pomena. To get to Pomena, it takes between 3 hours to 3 hours and 45 minutes, depending on the ferry service. It runs three times a day, seven days a week during the summer season. Tickets for foot passengers cost €25.
NOTE | This ferry does not run in the off-season. If you want to Mljet from Split outside of summer, you will have to travel to transfer to a nearby island such as Korčula.
From Dubrovnik
The ferry from Dubrovnik to Mljet is much shorter. From Polače, it takes around 1 hour 40 minutes. It runs once a day, every day during the summer season. Tickets for foot passengers cost €10.45.
If you want to be even closer to the park, the ferry to Pomena runs 3 times a day, every day during the summer season. It takes between 1 hour 20 and 1 hour 30. Tickets for foot passengers cost between €18-20.

Things to Do in Mljet National Park
Mljet National Park is a large expanse of luscious greenery and is home to 4km of crystal clear blue lakes. It is one of the most beautiful places I’ve travelled to, and there’s an abundance of ways for you to experience its beauty.
Whilst you can have a wonderful time simply swimming in its waters and bathing under the shaded trees, I’ve put together some fun and exciting ways to spend your time in the park.
Here are some of the top things to do in Mljet National Park:
Explore Veliko & Malo Jezero
Mljet National Park’s captivating lakes, Veliko & Malo Jezero, are the main attraction. Exploring the lakes can be done in various ways, which I’ll discuss below. However, a great way to experience them is a simple walk along the shaded path that surrounds them.
The entire path takes about 2 hours to complete, and I highly recommend stopping for a couple of swims along the way. The water is warm, and you can find secluded spots around the lake or head to the small pebble beach at Mali Most for a refreshing dip.

Visit the Benedictine Monastery at St Mary’s Islet
In the Veliko Jezero, you’ll find the Benedictine Monastery, sat on the islet of St. Mary. This picturesque 12th-century stone building is surrounded by crystal-clear lake waters and lush green forests. On the islet, you’ll find a peaceful garden, a church, a small museum, and a restaurant near the boat dock.
For me, the highlight was swimming in the incredible blue water. Head through the garden to find a paved path along the islet’s edge. Despite being a popular destination, and travelling during peak times, the area still has a sense of tranquillity with enough space to enjoy the natural beauty without feeling crowded.
How to Get to the Benedictine Monastery
A shuttle ferry runs every half an hour between Pristanište, a small hamlet near Veliko Jezero, St Mary’s Islet, and Mali Most (Small Bridge) which is next to Malo Jezero.
A return ticket is included in your entrance fee.
Hike the Parks Many Walking Trails
Mljet National Park in Croatia offers plenty of walking trails, ranging from easy paths from the villages to around the lakes to more challenging routes up the rolling hills. Here’s a useful website with 20 hikes around Mljet National Park. It has information on estimated time, distance, and elevation.
I’d suggest you get a free leaflet from the tourist point or purchase a physical map of the national park from the shop near the pier in Pristanište. Do not rely on Google Maps. Whilst it’s great for roads, it does not have updated trail paths.
Cycle through the Park
Renting a bicycle is another great way to explore the park, especially if you’re short on time. The park is relatively flat, making cycling a breeze and I’d recommend renting an electric bike for hot summer days.
You can rent bikes from multiple places in both Pomena and Polače, as well as the car park at Vrbovica. At most rental shops, you can rent a bike for 1 hour, 4 hours, or 24 hours, costing around €30 for 4 hours. There’s no need to pre-book these in advance. There are many different vendors, you’re sure to get one on the day.
Kayak and Paddleboard on the Lakes
What’s the best thing to do when you get beautifully flat, crystalline blue lakes? Paddleboarding. Paddleboarding and kayaking are popular activities on the crystal-clear lakes within the park, with rental services available at Mali Most.
It’s a surreal experience to paddle or kayak amidst the stunning scenery, and you can even visit the Benedictine Monastery at St. Mary’s Islet.

Climb Mt. Montokuc for Incredible Views
I say this a lot about exploring new places, but one of my favourite things to do is to see where I am from above. In Mljet, Mt. Montokuc offers the best views in Mljet National Park. As the highest peak, it provides uninterrupted 360-degree vistas of the island, including the lakes, bay of Pomena, and the Adriatic.
There are two designated paths that lead to the mountain’s summit, one coming from Polače, the other coming off Veliko Jezero. You can do the walk in about 45 minutes, and you will be greatly rewarded for your efforts.
To avoid the heat, it’s recommended to hike in the late afternoon or early morning. This way, you can enjoy better lighting and admire the stunning orange glow over the island.

Mljet National Park is a beautiful oasis, and it is a gorgeous place to wander. The main attractions to the park are relatively close together, and so it’s pretty easy to get around. However, there are a few different ways you can explore the park.

Walking
There are plenty of trails throughout the park that make it easy to explore on foot. They are well signposted, so it’s easy to find the route you want and explore the luscious green hills that make up this beautiful park.
Cycling
Another great way to explore the park is by renting a bicycle. If you’re only visiting for a short amount of time, this is the perfect option for you, allowing you to see more of the park in a shorter amount of time.
You can rent bikes from both Pomena and Polače, as well as inside the park itself.
Ferry Boat
There is a ferry boat that runs every 30 minutes across the lakes. It travels in a loop, from the Large Lake to St Mary’s Islet, to the Little Lake and back again. You get a free return ticket included in your entrance ticket for the park.
Electric Train

How much is the entrance fee for Mljet National Park?
To enter the national park, you need to purchase an entrance ticket. While it is possible to wander in and out without buying a ticket, I wouldn’t recommend it. The ticket fee contributes to the park’s maintenance and care. Supporting the park ensures its preservation for future years.

What is the average water temperature in the Lakes?
During the summer season, the temperature of Malo Jezero ranges from 26 to 29 °C. It is slightly cooler (but still incredibly warm) in the larger lake, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 26°C.
Are there hiking trails in Mljet National Park?
There are plenty of hiking trails in the park! From beginner to intermediate, there’s something to enjoy in this park.
A great beginner trail is from Pomena to the lakes. There are also plenty of hiking routes through the parks rolling hills, which will take you to incredible viewpoints such as Mt. Montokuc.
What is the best time to visit Mljet National Park?
As with most places in Europe, you want to avoid going during the peak summer season. Not only to avoid the crowds but the incredibly hot summers.
You will want to travel in May/June or September/October to take advantage of the good weather and quieter park.
However, we went in July and despite it being during peak season, were still able to avoid a lot of the crowds.
TOP TIP | Don’t go at the weekend! When we visited the park on a Sunday, it was much busier and filled with large groups of people. We went back the next day, and had the little lake almost completely to ourselves! It was pretty incredible.
What should I wear to Mljet National Park?
When visiting Mljet National Park, be prepared for a lot of walking, cycling, and, of course, swimming.
Comfortable shoes are a must, as the smaller trails are uneven and you can easily trip. If you want to explore the water, I’d recommend bringing water shoes for the pebble beaches and rocky river edges.
As for clothing, make sure to wear something comfortable and breathable, like sporty shorts and a vest top in the summer months. If you’re not planning on exploring the trails, treat it like a beach day. Wear what you would for going in and out of the water, and you’ll be set!
