Weekend trips around Europe are the perfect opportunity to escape your everyday routine and explore the world around you. If you’re like me and work full time, a lot of your travel is to happen on the weekend. Lucky for us, Europe is filled with stunning destinations just a short flight or train ride away. From historic cities to stunning coastlines, there’s no shortage of options for a quick holiday away.
In this post, I’ve put together a list of the 20 best weekend trips in Europe. Whether you’re after culture, food or adventure, there’s something here for you. I’ve taken many weekend trips to Europe as I try to squeeze as much travelling in over the year. And some of these trips have been my favourite holidays.
But weekend trips are not only great if you work full time, but are perfect for anyone looking for a budget trip. Many of the European cities on this list can be travelled on a budget, with cheap flights from the UK. If you’re savvy with your accommodation and learn how to eat abroad for cheap, you’ll be well on your way to having a great budget-friendly holiday.

Here are the best weekend trips in Europe
1. Edinburgh
Edinburgh is one of my favourite places to holiday in the UK. Despite living near Edinburgh for 5 years, it’s only since I moved away and came back for a weekend trip that I appreciated how charming Edinburgh is. Plus, with all the main attractions within walking or just a short tram ride away, Edinburgh perfect for a two-day trip.
When you visit Edinburgh, make sure to visit the infamous historic castle. On your way, you’ll pass many of Edinburgh’s charming independent shops and bars that line the Royal Mile. After, head to the other end of the mile to spend an afternoon lounging at Hollyrood Park with a picnic.
If you’re after a bit more nature, take a short train ride down to Portabello Beach. Stretching along Scotland’s east coast, the beach is a lovely if not a bit surprising, respite from the busy Edinburgh streets.
Or, if you’d like to stay a bit close to Edinburgh’s centre and see the city from above, head up to Arthur’s Seat. This gorgeous walk doesn’t take too long and is relatively easy so long as you take the sloping path up. It offers great city views and, on a clear day, you can even see over the Firth of Forth to Fife.
One of the best times to visit Edinburgh is during the Fringe Festival. With street acts and live comedy and performances happening all day, every day for three weeks during August, you can’t help but feel excited to be there. Because of this, it does make Edinburgh very expensive to visit during this time, but it’s definitely something you should do at least once.

2. Krakow
Krakow is found in southern Poland and an underrated gem in Europe. From its charming Historic Centre, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to iconic landmarks like the majestic Wawel Castle and the St. Mary’s Basilica, this city exudes history and beauty.
When I visited krakow on a long weekend, I was captivated by its rich heritage and vibrant atmosphere, enjoying the city’s beauty during the day and its lively nightlife at night.
If you’re able to spend a long weekend in Krakow, make sure to visit the nearby Wieliczka Salt Mine. Dating back to the 13th century, this underground marvel offers a fascinating glimpse into centuries of mining history, showcasing intricate salt chambers and remarkable salt sculptures crafted by skilled artisans.
Beyond its historical allure, Krakow boasts a lively nightlife scene with lots of heartwarming food to go with it. Whether savouring traditional Polish delights like pierogi, and potato pancakes or indulging in the city’s vibrant bar scene offering well-priced libations, there’s no shortage of fun to be had.

3. Barcelona
Barcelona is another of my favourite cities I’ve visited in recent years. Whilst a lot bigger than most of the other cities on this list, Barcelona still makes for a great weekend trip in Europe because of its great public transport system meaning you can still get to all the major sites in just a few days.

I found myself captivated by Barcelona’s lively ambience and rich cultural tapestry. From the iconic architectural wonders of Antoni Gaudi, such as the awe-inspiring Sagrada Familia and the whimsical Park Guell, Barcelona’s skyline is a testament to creative brilliance.
When you visit Barcelona, make sure to explore the winding alleys of the Gothic Quarter was a personal highlight. Each narrow street revealed layers of history and culture, offering a glimpse into Barcelona’s storied past.
Of course, no visit to Barcelona would be complete without indulging in its renowned culinary scene. From savouring traditional Catalan dishes like paella and fideua to sampling an array of mouthwatering tapas and fresh seafood, every meal was a delightful exploration of local flavours.

4. Berlin
Berlin, a city teeming with history, culture, and boundless energy, holds a special place in my heart, as it was one of the first trips I took as a teenager, just 17 years old, exploring its streets with a friend. Now, years later, I still think Berlin is an ideal destination for a weekend escape in Europe.
Berling is renowned for its iconic landmarks. From the solemn remnants of the Berlin Wall to the majestic Brandenburg Gate, each monument stands as a testament to the city’s resilience and evolution
Moreover, Berlin’s commitment to preserving memory extends to poignant sites like the Holocaust Memorial, serving as a solemn tribute to the millions who perished during World War II. Exploring these sombre yet essential reminders was a sobering experience, offering a deeper understanding of the city’s tumultuous past.
But Berlin is more than its history with a lively creative scene, there are plenty of museums and galleries for you to explore. Explore places like the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, the Jewish Museum, and the renowned East Side Gallery, a preserved segment of the Berlin Wall covered in bright street art. 5. London
Having lived near London for the past seven years and frequently embarking on weekend getaways to the lively city, I can attest that a trip to London is a delightful way to spend your weekend. It is a city brimming with history, culture, and endless entertainment options.
London is a tapestry of iconic landmarks. From the formidable Tower of London to the majestic Buckingham Palace and the treasure trove of artefacts at the British Museum. Each site offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, enriching every visit with historical intrigue.
But just because London is so busy, it doesn’t mean you do too. A leisurely stroll along the River Thames might be simple but can be just as lovely as rushing from site to site. From here, you can take in the breathtaking vistas of the city skyline, where modern marvels like the Shard harmoniously coexist with historic landmarks like the Tower Bridge.
And, of course, one of the best things about London is the culinary scene. In London, you’ll find food from all over the world, from Korean hotdogs to giant stuffed croissants, and places like Borough Market, London is a gastronomic haven for food enthusiasts.
So whilst London might seem like an overwhelming choice for a weekend away, it almost has so much to do that it’s perfect for a weekend away. You don’t have to rush to fit everything in (because that would be impossible). You simply have to walk around and enjoy whatever it is you happen to stumble across.

6. Paris
Paris is a city renowned for its romance, beauty, and cultural riches but for me, it is the place where my mum and I went on our first girls’ trip for my 16th birthday. For three days, we hopped over the channel and explored this wonderful city, and I still think Paris is perfect for a weekend getaway.
Overflowing with iconic landmarks and attractions, Paris promises a whirlwind of enchanting experiences. From the iconic silhouette of the Eiffel Tower to the world-renowned art collections housed within the Louvre Museum, every corner of the city invites exploration and wonder.
Even after years, memories of strolling along the Seine admiring the stalls selling second-hand books and posters, looking up at the intricate details of Notre Dame Cathedral, and wandering through the charming neighbourhoods of Montmartre and the Marais remain vivid and cherished.
Moreover, Paris’ legendary culinary scene, with an array of cafes, restaurants, and patisseries, is just waiting to be discovered. Whilst I wasn’t brave enough to savour classic French delicacies like escargots, I was more than happy to wake up to a freshly baked croissant and snack on a croque monsieur for lunch.
Paris’s allure as a weekend destination is further enhanced by its convenient proximity to London. You don’t have to faff with airport security and annoying wait times, and instead, take the comfortable train ride across the Channel and to Paris in just a few hours. This seamless connection makes it easier than ever to escape to the City of Light for a brief yet unforgettable rendezvous with romance, culture, and gastronomy.

7. Athens
Whether travelling with friends or embarking on a solo trip, Athens is a captivating European city, brimming with cultural treasures. Having recently spent a long weekend immersed in its rich history, I can highly recommend it as a contender for your next weekend escape in Europe.
With its ancient landmarks like the Acropolis and the Parthenon, Athens has one of the most fascinating pasts, offering glimpses into civilizations so ancient it’s impossible to comprehend. When I was exploring the streets of Athens, I was continuously blown away by how many ancient ruins are around every corner just waiting for you to stumble across.
Athens is also home to an array of world-class museums, including the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum, each offering invaluable insights into the city’s illustrious heritage. With such a wealth of history concentrated within a few minutes’ walking distance, a weekend in Athens promises enriching experiences at every turn.
Yet, Athens is not all about ancient ruins. It is a city with a great energy, with neighbourhoods like Plaka and Monastiraki lined with charming shops, inviting tavernas, and lively bars. You can easily spend a weekend dipping in and out of here, indulging on succulent gyros and creamy tzatziki. After a weekend here, Greek food will be your new favourite cuisine, trust me!

8. Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre, one of Italy’s most beautiful spots, is an ideal destination for a weekend trip in Europe for several reasons. Firstly, its stunning natural beauty, characterized by rugged cliffs, colorful villages, and crystal-clear waters, offers a picturesque setting that’s perfect for relaxation and exploration.
Whilst 5 villages might seem a lot to visit in one weekend, it’s pretty easy to travel between them, whether you choose to take a longer but beautiful coastal walk or choose the quicker and more convenient option of the train.
For just one weekend, I would pick two or three to visit during your time here to really make the most of your trip. hiking, train, or boat—makes it convenient for visitors to experience the unique charm of each location within a short timeframe.
Whilst here, enjoy Cinque Terre’s culinary scene. Particularly, its fresh seafood and local specialties like focaccia di Recco, provide a delicious taste of Italian coastal cuisine. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely meal at a seaside restaurant or grabbing a quick snack from a local market, the food here is sure to delight your taste buds.
With its laid-back atmosphere and authentic Italian charm, Cinque Terre makes it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s perfect for some downtime between your busy day job, or if you’re after a bit of sunshine and colour.

9. Amsterdam
Having embarked on a long weekend trip to Amsterdam myself, I can say for sure that Amsterdam is a place you should visit. With its undeniable charm, stunning canals, picturesque architecture, and lively nightlife, Amsterdam offers a delightful array of experiences.
During my own visit, I found myself immersed in the city’s rich cultural scene, exploring renowned museums like the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. Of course, I had to take a stroll through the famous Red Light District, but it was the stroopwafels, bitterballen and canals that really stole my heart.
If you’re after a more leisurely weekend escape, Amsterdam offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation. From scenic canal tours to leisurely bike rides through the city’s parks and green spaces, there’s no shortage of ways to unwind and soak in the city’s beauty. Plus, if you’re travelling during the spring, make sure to visit the stunning tulip fields in Keukenhof.

10. Lisbon
The capital of Portugal is the perfect weekend destination. After all, who wouldn’t want to spend a few days exploring the historic Alfama district? Wandering through its winding streets provides a glimpse into Lisbon’s rich history, while panoramic views from the Castelo de São Jorge offer an unforgettable perspective of the city.
Lisbon is also filled with UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the iconic Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. These architectural wonders offer insight into Portugal’s illustrious past and are must-visit attractions for any traveller.

11. Budapest
Budapest is a delightful choice for a weekend getaway, offering a blend of rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture without breaking the bank. The city’s warm ambience and friendly locals make it a welcoming destination for travellers seeking a relaxed yet fulfilling escape.
I spent 3 days exploring Budapest and was immediately captivated by the majestic Danube River which cut the city in two. With picturesque views from iconic landmarks like Buda Castle on one side and the Parliament Building on the other. Exploring the historic district of Castle Hill, with its charming cobblestone streets and quaint cafes, felt like stepping back in time.
You can’t take a trip to Budapest without venturing over to the bustling Pest side. Here, I spend a few hours relaxing in the city’s renowned thermal baths, a rejuvenating experience that left me feeling refreshed and invigorated after a week at work.
Whether it’s taking a leisurely cruise along the Danube, admiring the panoramic vistas from Fisherman’s Bastion, or unwinding in a thermal spa, Budapest offers an array of activities to suit every taste. My weekend escape to this enchanting city left me with cherished memories and a longing to return.

12. Munich
Munich is an ideal destination for a weekend getaway, offering a delightful blend of Bavarian charm, cultural richness, and winter wonder. Despite not having visited personally, I’ve heard countless tales from my mum, who adores Munich and has returned multiple times.
Unlike a lot of the cities on the list, Munich is one of the best European cities to visit during the winter months. Munich transforms into a magical wonderland, with its charming Christmas markets, adorned with twinkling lights and festive decorations. The aroma of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts fills the air, creating a cosy atmosphere perfect for exploring the city’s historic streets.
My mum often reminisces about strolling through the bustling Marienplatz, admiring the grandeur of the New Town Hall and the Glockenspiel performance. She speaks fondly of savouring traditional Bavarian dishes in cosy taverns, accompanied by hearty beers brewed in local breweries.
But, regardless of the season, Munich has many cultural treasures, such as renowned museums like the Deutsches Museum and the Alte Pinakothek, ready to be explored all year round. It is a city that promises a weekend getaway filled with warmth, joy, and cherished memories, as attested by my mum’s enduring love for this enchanting city.
13. Bologna
Of all the cities on this list, I would argue Bologna is the one most worth visiting. After solo backpacking through Italy, I discovered much to love about the country, but Bologna held a unique charm that left a lasting impression.
The city pulses with energy, thanks to its vibrant student population who gather in the lively bars lining its streets. Though surprisingly, amidst the hustle and bustle, Bologna exudes a tranquil atmosphere, inviting you to leisurely explore its winding lanes. Make sure to stay in Bologna’s Historic centre to make the most out of your weekend trip!
With such a rich architectural heritage, there are so many things to do in Bologna, from the iconic Two Towers to the grandeur of Basilica di San Petronio. The city boasts an array of museums, including the National Art Gallery of Bologna and the Museum of Modern Art, offering cultural enrichment at every turn. Don’t miss the opportunity to wander through the university library, a marvel of design and history.
If you haven’t guessed already, food is always a big draw to me when exploring somewhere new. Bologna’s culinary scene is legendary, beckoning with tantalizing dishes like tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini in brodo, and succulent mortadella.

14. Lake Como
Lake Como is an idyllic escape for a weekend trip, with serene landscapes, charming towns, and plenty of activities to enjoy. Conveniently located near Milan, which always has plenty of cheap flights available, Lake Como is easily accessible, making it an ideal choice for a short getaway.
Upon arrival, take a moment to appreciate the beauty of Lake Como which is surrounded by majestic mountains and lush greenery. Take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque waterfront promenades, where you can soak in the tranquil atmosphere and admire the stunning views.
There are a few places around Lake Como to stay. One of the best places to stay in is Bellagio, often referred to as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” known for its elegant villas, colourful gardens, and charming cobblestone streets. If you fancy somewhere a bit different, check out Varenna, with its romantic ambience and historic landmarks such as Villa Monastero and the Castello di Vezio.

15. Verona
Verona, with its romantic ambience and rich history, is an ideal destination for a weekend getaway. Though I was only able to spend one day in Verona (on account of a missed bus transfer), it was clear to me that Verona has much to offer. ts compact size and plenty of attractions, Verona is easily travelled in a weekend
Arriving in Verona, you’re immediately captivated by its timeless beauty. The city’s well-preserved historic centre boasts magnificent architecture, including the iconic Arena di Verona, a Roman amphitheatre that hosts world-class opera performances during the summer months. And with so many stunning balconies, you’ll spend most of your time with a crooked neck looking up.
Wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets, you’ll discover hidden piazzas, elegant palaces, and quaint cafes tucked away in picturesque corners. If you want a more relaxing moment, take a leisurely stroll along the Adige River, crossing the charming bridges that offer stunning views of the cityscape.
Verona is also renowned for inspiring Shakespeare’s tragic love story, Romeo and Juliet, so take a peak into Juliet’s House, where you can stand beneath the famous balcony and leave a love note on the courtyard wall. Despite its touristy nature, the experience is undeniably romantic and worth a pass by.

I’ve been to Dubrovnik on a budget-friendly trip as well as on a family vacation, and have firmly fallen in love with this city.
With a small but beautiful old town, you can easily explore it within a few days. Wander through the charming, cobblestone streets of the Old Town, and I had some of the best ice creams ever in Dubrvniks Old Town, with unique flavours such as Green Apple and Orange. Explore the majestic city walls, and take in the panoramic views from the cable car ride up Mount Srd. Sample delicious local cuisine at charming cafes and indulge in some shopping at the vibrant markets.
If you have an extra day, make sure to check out some of the nearby islands. There are some great day trips to day trip to Korcula or the stunning island of Mljet, home to Mljet National Park, is just a short ferry ride away. I spent a week travelling Croatia and fell in love with the beautiful Croatian scenery.
